Bongo 20.2.10 Service Patch

Release Date: 5/14/2020

Bypass Brightspace events API for whole-class meetings

  • For Brightspace users, the Bongo application calls a Brightspace API to determine if a user should see a Virtual Classroom session on the meeting list page. Depending on the number of meetings in the class, this call can take longer than desired to run.
  • If all of the meetings for a class are “Whole Class” meetings, it should not be necessary to make the Brightspace API call. As of the end of April, over 70% of classes have “Whole Class” meetings only. By removing the API call, users accessing these classes should see significantly faster load time of the meeting list page in Bongo.

Reduced bitrate for Virtual Classroom webcams

  • The target bitrate for sharing webcams in Virtual Classroom has been reduced from 300 kbps to 200 kbps. Testing has confirmed that this change has negligible to no difference in video quality while requiring less bandwidth for users sharing their webcam as well as those viewing webcams.

Bongo 20.2.9 Service Patch

Release Date: 5/7/2020

Improved performance on Meeting List page

  • Previously, the meeting list page in Bongo may have become slow to load as the number of meetings in the class increased.
  • The background call to retrieve the list of meetings has been optimized and users should observe faster response time when loading the meeting list page.

Bongo 20.2.8 Service Patch

Release Date: 4/30/2020

Virtual Classroom network monitor updates

  • Previously, the Virtual Classroom network monitor would test the user’s download speed every 60 seconds by doing a 512k download test. The download size has been increased to 3MB per test to get a more realistic metric.
  • Because of the increased download size, the test will no longer run automatically every 60 seconds. Instead, the user can run a test on-demand inside the details view of the network monitor. Downloading 512 KB every 60 seconds takes up substantial bandwidth on a connection that may already be constrained.  By making it on-demand, users on constrained networks can expect to have better audio/video quality
  • To accommodate these changes, the monitor rating is now only based on the ping value.

Moved Virtual Classroom browser checks

  • Due to some issues with browser compatibility checks on the meeting lobby page, these browser checks have been removed. The compatibility of a user’s browser will now be tested after he or she joins the session.

Increase port range for audio connections

  • Due to increased usage, there have been audio connection issues (1004 errors) for some customers. There were previously only 500 ports available for audio connections on a single meeting server. This has been increased to over 8,000.

iOS/iPadOS 13.4: Virtual Classroom audio message
